Tragedy struck on a Lake County road Friday night when a head-on collision resulted in the deaths of a man and a woman, with another individual seriously injured. The incident, which involved a misguided overtaking maneuver, occurred on County Road 42, near Lazy Lake Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
As reported by ClickOrlando, a 46-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman from Paisley were traveling westbound in their sedan when they were struck. The driver responsible for the collision, a 26-year-old man from Tavares in an eastbound sedan, had been attempting to pass other vehicles in a no-passing zone. The FHP's report indicates that this decision led to the devastating encounter as both cars approached Lazy Lake Road.
The Tavares man, who was found to have been speeding, negotiated a curve and veered into the opposite lane, directly into the path of the oncoming vehicle. Following the impact, his car ran off the roadway and into a nearby tree line, where he suffered serious injuries and required air transportation to the hospital. Although everyone wore their seat belts, the man and the woman in the other sedan did not survive, as noted in statements from law enforcement.
While the FHP continued its investigation into the exact circumstances leading to the incident, WESH reported that the man and woman inside the Mitsubishi were pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the Ford Mustang driver, who is now in the hospital, has yet to be disclosed.
