Almost two months following a fatal hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of 67-year-old Robin Brown in Lakeland, police arrested 41-year-old Daniel Kovacs, reports WTSP. The tragic event unfolded shortly after midnight on November 23, 2024, when Brown was crossing South Florida Avenue and was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.
In a recent development, Kovacs faced a judge who set his bond at $550,000 with an 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew while Kovacs’s attorney highlighted his strong community ties emphasizing he is a professional engineer, consultant and a small business owner in Polk County, according to WFLA. The Lakeland Police Department stated that after canvassing local auto shops, they received a tip from an employee at The Lakeland Body Shop Collision Repair regarding a vehicle matching the description of the suspect's car, as obtained by FOX 13 News.
Upon investigation, the car—a silver 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport belonging to Kovacs—showed evidence consistent with the crash, including recent attempts to conceal damages with tape and zip ties. Surveillance videos traced Kovacs' movements on the night of the incident, showing him consuming alcohol at a downtown restaurant; Lakeland Police Capt. Cheryl Kimball poignantly questioned how anyone could live with the conscience of leaving a person for dead after such an accident.
Kovacs was apprehended at his residence just before 2 p.m. on Wednesday, facing charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving death and tampering with physical evidence, police utilized surveillance footage that captured the Land Rover, and it allowed them to connect Kovacs to the crime scene, a heartbreaking case that forced Lakeland residents and investigators to reckon with the senselessness of the tragedy, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Ms. Brown as they mourn her loss," expressed Lakeland Police Chief Sam Taylor in a statement obtained by WTSP. The investigation, which remains ongoing, further revealed Kovacs’ debit card history, including a transaction at Tampa General Hospital, although no medical records to suggest injuries were found.
