The Las Cruces Police Department is taking a proactive approach to bridging the gap between law enforcement and the community with the announcement of its next Citizens Police Academy. Scheduled to begin on February 18, 2025, the tuition-free, four-week program seeks to immerse members of the community in the intricate world of policing, offering a comprehensive overview of the philosophy, and guiding principles that dictate ethical policing within our society. Interested locals can apply for one of the limited 20 spots available in the upcoming class.
According to the City of Las Cruces, the academy's curriculum is designed to provide participants with a blend of classroom instruction and hands-on training exercises. These include topics such as Search & Seizure, Criminal Law, Use of Force, Human Performance, and Crisis Intervention Techniques. Participants should note that some scenarios may involve light physical activity and potentially induce stress, as part of the training is meant to simulate realistic situations that officers often face.
Students who complete the training are also given the chance to take part in an eight-hour ride-along with a police officer, a component of the program that has historically proven to be an eye-opener for many. This aspect allows participants to observe the day-to-day operations of the police force, providing valuable insights into the real-world applications of their classroom learning.
Applicants interested in joining the upcoming Citizens Police Academy must meet certain requirements which include being at least 18 years of age, without any felony convictions, and with no misdemeanor or D.W.I. arrests within the last three years from the application date. Applicants must also pass a background check conducted by the Las Cruces Police Department. While it is preferred that applicants be residents of Las Cruces, the department emphasizes on its website that these requirements should not be a deterrent, as applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and decisions are made individually.
All applications, which may include sensitive information needed for the background check, are to be submitted in person either at the East Mesa Public Safety Complex or the Las Cruces Police Department main station during business hours as outlined on the official website. The application deadline is set for January 17 at noon. Those completing the program will be awarded a certificate during a graduation ceremony on March 13.
