Leeward Oʻahu residents can expect to navigate through some ongoing construction work as the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) progresses with its infrastructure projects in the area. Updates on the Maʻipalaoa Bridge project, Waʻianae Community Emergency Access Road (WCEAR), and Mākaha Bridge No. 3 and 3A Replacement Project have recently been shared.
According to an update from HDOT, the Maʻipalaoa Bridge project is in its final phases and currently undergoing guardrail installations, causing single-lane closure on westbound Farrington Highway from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., a final inspection is set to follow which will generate additional tasks to round off the project. The public will be notified of necessary lane closures ahead of time and the completion of the project will eventually be celebrated with a blessing ceremony, details of which are yet to be announced.
Meanwhile, the planning for the WCEAR along Paʻakea Road is moving forward, having secured the necessary environmental clearances and is working on the land acquisition aspect, with an expected wrap-up in Spring 2025 and the actual construction phase commencing in Summer 2025 – details on this will be released as the project unfolds.
The Mākaha Bridge No. 3 and 3A Replacement Project reached a major construction milestone in September last year, and crews are diligently tackling the remaining odds and ends like the installation of bollard gates, reseeding hydro-mulch areas, concrete sealing along with minor chain-link fence adjustments; all this is without the need for lane closures and is anticipated to be wrapped up by the end of this past week, this being according to the same HDOT communication and the community can look forward to another blessing ceremony for this endeavor once it is complete.
The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has issued a reminder that all project timelines are subject to weather conditions, with any changes to schedules being communicated accordingly. To stay informed on the latest traffic advisories, residents are encouraged to sign up for weekly updates through HDOT's official lane closure page.
