Tragedy struck on Alameda Boulevard in Las Cruces Tuesday evening when a collision claimed the life of a local cyclist, identified as 61-year-old Lorenzo Espinoza. According to the City of Las Cruces, around 7:20 p.m. last night, emergency responders rushed to the scene near the intersection of North Alameda Boulevard and Harvard Drive to aid the injured cyclist.
Despite prompt medical attention and transportation to Mountainview Regional Medical Center, Espinoza succumbed to his injuries following the crash his life cut short in the very lane designed to protect it. The incident involved a gray 2017 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by a 31-year-old man who remained on the scene, and cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation authorities say, with neither alcohol nor drugs immediately appearing to contribute to the collision.
The driver involved in the accident has yet to face any charges as the Las Cruces police continue their meticulous work in piecing together the events leading up to the tragic incident. The dedicated bike lane, a sliver of safety amid the asphalt sea, stands as a reminder of Espinoza's perilous final journey and the community’s loss.
