As Los Angeles grapples with the dire effects of the recent wildfires, a collaboration between state and federal forces has proven to be a crucial alliance. Governor Gavin Newsom expressed gratitude towards the Biden-Harris Administration for its prompt action, which has fortified California's firefighting efforts. According to an announcement by the Governor's Office, the partnership has provided federal emergency funds and resources.
Following an in-depth briefing about the Los Angeles fires with President Biden in Santa Monica, a swift approval of Governor Newsom’s request for a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration was issued, this declaration is aimed to bolster the response to the striking wildfires and included Individual Assistance programs, aiding local citizens and businesses with recovery, including temporary lodging and financial help for those who lost property. Californians affected by the fire can seek federal assistance at disasterassistance.gov, a resource made promptly available in the aftermath of the declaration. "President Biden and his Administration have been incredible partners in our ongoing fight against these unprecedented wildfires," Newsom stated, emphasizing the comprehensive federal aid which now, following the President's authorization will cover 100% of the state's fire management and debris removal costs for 180 days, as reported by the Governor's Office.
The federal assistance is not just financial. Tangible resources such as eight large air tankers, 19 helicopters, and numerous engines have been directed to California, offering critical reinforcement to the thousands of firefighters working tirelessly against the flames. As per the Governor's Office, California also secured Fire Management Assistance Grants (FMAG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), these grants which come from the President’s Disaster Relief Fund on a cost-share basis, will allow local, state, and tribal agencies fight the fires and seek full reimbursement for eligible fire suppression costs.
FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell has been actively involved in Los Angeles, discussing ongoing strategies with Governor Newsom. The Presidential Declaration, alongside the substantial fire suppression support, illustrates a united front against this natural disaster that has been endorsed by the Federal government, aiding Californians as they confront and march through the blaze towards recovery. "Thanks to the President’s Major Disaster Declaration, Californians can begin applying for federal assistance to help them recover from these devastating fires," Newsom said, a testament to the joint effort that is bringing hope and material aid to the affected regions, the Governor's Office noted.
