The Los Angeles region is bracing for a series of hazardous weather conditions, in the wake of a series of urgent warnings from the National Weather Service (NWS). Residents are advised to take immediate precautions as various watches, including a Fire Weather Watch and High Wind Watch, have been declared active. According to the extended forecast, sunny skies with temperatures peaking at 75 degrees are expected today, yet the serenity is set to be disrupted by potentially damaging weather conditions due to roll in over the coming days.
Starting from Tuesday, January 7, at 10:00 AM PST until January 8, 06:00 PM PST, the Los Angeles County Inland Coast, including Downtown Los Angeles, and surrounding regions are on alert for "North to northeast winds 25 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph possible," as per the NWS High Wind Watch notification. These conditions raise the chances for downed trees and powerlines, not to mention power outages and travel disruptions, especially for those in high-profile vehicles.
This watch extends into a Red Flag Warning for much of Los Angeles County as well as parts of Ventura County from Tuesday morning to Thursday evening. The NWS High Wind Watch advises "conditions are favorable for very rapid fire spread and extreme fire behavior, including long range spotting, which would threaten life and property."
Adding to environmental concerns, a mandatory wood-burning ban is in effect due to an Air Quality Alert from the South Coast AQMD, covering Los Angeles and parts of Riverside, San Bernardino, and Orange counties. This ban is a response to anticipated levels of fine particle pollution, which can significantly impact health, inducing a range of respiratory issues. It's advised that residents "check current and forecasted air quality levels at www.aqmd.gov or download the mobile app," as per information from South Coast AQMD.
