Hilary Ulp, a 46-year-old Macomb County woman, has been sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for the death of her ex-boyfriend’s son after abusing the child nearly a decade prior. The child, Nicolas Kuras, was just 14 months old at the time of the abuse in 2015 and succumbed to his injuries in 2021 at nearly 7 years old.
According to ClickOnDetroit, Ulp was initially convicted and sentenced to 11-30 years in prison for first-degree child abuse after Kuras was hospitalized with a serious head injury. Following the child's death, the charges were elevated to felony murder, and Ulp was found guilty in a trial concluding in December 2024.
Macomb County Government's official release shared that assistant prosecutors Sian Hengeveld and Emil Semaan headed the six-week jury trial leading to Ulp's conviction. In a statement, Lucido remarked on the verdict, saying, "I hope today’s verdict brings some measure of justice for the innocent child whose life was tragically cut short."
Ulp's attorney, Michael J. Cronkright, has not issued any public statements regarding the latest sentencing.
