Macy’s Inc. is streamlining its physical presence in the retail landscape by closing down 66 stores in the United States during the first quarter of 2025. Among these, multiple locations are in the New York City area, including the likes of Essex Green Shopping Center in New Jersey and Lake Success Shopping Center in New Hyde Park, NY., as NBC New York reported. These closures were originally slated to occur in 2024 but have been pushed to this year.

As conveyed by Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc., the decision to shut down these stores comes as part of the company’s "Bold New Chapter" strategy to prioritize investments in stores with the most potential and is aimed at setting the stage for sustainable, profitable growth, this plan is to reinvest in remaining locations, enhancing service and expanding product offerings, Macy's is trying to rejuvenate its brand by also opening 15 new Bloomingdale’s and 30 luxury Bluemercury cosmetics locations by 2026. In a statement obtained by FOX 5 New York, Spring stated, "Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy's stores to allow us to focus our resources."

In addition to an updated sales strategy, the retail giant will invest in upgrading 350 of its extant locations by adding more salespeople to key department areas, enhancing fitting room experiences, and improving visual merchandising. This bold retail maneuver aligns with Macy's overarching objective outlined for the next two years, which includes shutting down approximately 150 "underproductive stores" by the end of 2026. The store closures encompass a broad span of locations, with store shutdowns impacting regions as varied as California, Florida, and Texas, with the complete list being available for the public to view.

Macy's has announced store closures impacting various locations across the tri-state area, including New Hyde Park, Staten Island, and Brooklyn. These closures are part of a broader nationwide strategy affecting multiple states. Alongside these changes, the company has also revealed plans for significant upgrades to remaining stores. According to Macy's, these actions are intended to realign its business model and customer experience with evolving retail trends that integrate both traditional in-store shopping and digital commerce. The closures and enhancements reflect the company's response to a changing retail landscape
