Honolulu’s Major Mike Lambert has been appointed as the new Director of the State Department of Law Enforcement (DLE). Governor Josh Green, M.D., nominated Lambert, highlighting his over 20 years of experience in law enforcement. Lambert’s background includes roles ranging from patrolling the streets to leading narcotics investigations, contributing to Honolulu's public safety efforts. His work, including initiatives like HONU to support the state's homeless population, has been recognized by both the Governor and local community members.
According to the Governor's office, the soon-to-be DLE Director holds a Bachelor's degree with a Justice Concentration from the University of Hawai‘i, West O‘ahu. His achievements include being named to the "40 Under 40" list by the International Association of Chiefs of Police in 2018, recognizing his leadership potential in law enforcement. Governor Green’s office emphasized Lambert’s commitment, noting his combination of empathy and innovation as key qualities that are essential for leading the Department of Law Enforcement.
As Major Lambert prepares to take on his new role on February 1, Governor Green also recognized the work of outgoing Director Jordan Lowe. Lowe made significant contributions during his tenure, including efforts to establish the Department of Law Enforcement as an independent agency focused on statewide public safety. Lambert has stated his intention to build on these foundations and work alongside the community to strengthen public safety across Hawai‘i.
The leadership transition occurs as the State Department of Law Enforcement takes on a crucial role in coordinating public safety strategies and overseeing specialized enforcement units throughout Hawaii. With Lambert’s appointment awaiting approval by the Hawai‘i State Senate, Deputy Jared Redulla will serve as interim director. Lambert’s background in the HPD’s Narcotics Vice Division is expected to shape his approach to the statewide position, focusing on accountability and enhanced public safety measures.
