David Anthony Capato, 57, was arrested at Martha's Vineyard for allegedly threatening to "vaporize" people near his vehicle at the Steamship Authority terminal in Edgartown. The incident led to a large law enforcement response. Capato was charged with terroristic threats and other offenses, according to Boston 25 News.
Around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Capato found an unloaded revolver and placed it in a blue mailbox near the terminal. When police approached, he claimed to have more guns and an explosive device, threatening to "vaporize" anyone nearby. The area was evacuated, and a Tactical Response Team and the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad were called for assistance, as reported by NBC Boston.
Capato surrendered at the SSA terminal after several hours, where no explosives were found. An M4 assault rifle was discovered in his vehicle, and he had been wearing a body camera. Investigations are ongoing, involving several agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, after he discarded a revolver, later recovered from a USPS mailbox outside the terminal, as stated by NBC Boston.
