A tragic incident unfolded this past weekend when a man was fatally shot at a gas station in Shelby County. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that 39-year-old Anthony Nelson has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently facing second-degree murder charges. The violent encounter reportedly took place late Saturday night near Highway 51, according to a statement obtained by Action News 5.
Responding to reports of gunfire, deputies arrived at the gas station to find a male victim who had sustained gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Regional One Health, a Memphis hospital, where the victim was ultimately pronounced dead. The victim's identity has yet to be released as authorities continue their investigation. Details sent by the Sheriff's office to WREG News indicate that the shooting took place on the 5300 block of U.S. Highway 51 just south of Fite Road.
Subsequent to the shooting, a manhunt ensued for the suspect, which concluded when Anthony Nelson was apprehended in Hardin County—some 120 miles from the scene of the crime. Details shared by FOX13 Memphis explain that a BOLO had been issued across the state, and Nelson was ultimately located and taken into custody late Sunday morning.
Nelson was found following execution of a search warrant at a home on Dorothy Ann Lane in Saltillo, as confirmed by joint efforts from Hardin County deputies and Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers. He is presently being held in the Hardin County Jail with transfer to Shelby County Jail pending.
