Yesterday, Samuel Sipes, the 22-year-old man charged with the murder of a 17-year-old boy following a fentanyl overdose, was apprehended after failing to appear for his court date. The U.S. Marshals Service, collaborating with the DeSoto County Sheriff's Office, located Sipes at an apartment complex in Olive Branch, Mississippi. FOX13 Memphis reported that Sipes was taken into custody without any incidents and is now detained at the DeSoto County Jail, awaiting extradition back to Tennessee.
The case began in January 2023 when a 17-year-old was discovered deceased from an overdose on Wrenwood Street in Memphis. The medical examiner's autopsy later confirmed the cause of death to be fentanyl toxicity. According to records cited by Action News 5, phone calls and text message evidence linked the illegal drugs back to Sipes. He was initially charged with second-degree murder in April of 2023 and was released on a $100,000 bond but failed to return to court on the scheduled date.
A failure to appear warrant was issued on November 12, 2024, as Sipes became a fugitive. This led to the involvement of the U.S. Marshals Service Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force (TRVFTF), who successfully followed leads to Sipes's location. As conveyed by WREG, this arrest highlights ongoing efforts to hold individuals accountable for distributing substances that result in fatal overdoses.
