Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. has announced the indictment of a man following a violent assault on a subway platform last month. Orsen Reyes, 23, stands accused of a brutal attack on a 48-year-old man that took place at the 50th Street subway station on December 30, 2024. Reyes faces several serious charges including one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, according to the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.
The indictment, brought before the New York State Supreme Court, includes a litany of charges: two counts of Assault in the First Degree, three counts of Assault in the Second Degree, and three counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree, as mentioned by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. The prosecution alleges that Reyes stomped on the victim's head over twenty times, slashed his face and neck multiple times, and even attempted to drag the man toward the subway tracks. In describing the vicious attack, D.A. Bragg said, "New Yorkers deserve to be safe in our subway system, and we will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to combat transit crime." The victim required a week of hospitalization at Bellevue Hospital for a traumatic brain injury, multiple fractures, and lacerations.
Thanks to the quick action of an eyewitness who called 911, law enforcement were able to apprehend Reyes promptly. Arrested covered in blood and discovered with a knife and two screwdrivers, the accused was found at a subway station at West 59th Street and Columbus Circle, only minutes after the attack. Assistant D.A. Caroline Edgar is handling the prosecution of this case, overseen by Assistant D.A. Charles Whitt and Executive Assistant D.A. Lisa DelPizzo.
In gratitude for their instrumental role in responding to the incident, D.A. Bragg extended his thanks towards the NYPD, specifically mentioning Officers Azure Reid, Christian Medina, and Chad Leed of Transit District 1.
