Uber Eats Driver Brawls With Barstool Staff at Chelsea HQ, One Detained

A verbal dispute over a food delivery erupted into a violent brawl inside Barstool Sports' Manhattan headquarters, with an Uber Eats courier allegedly punching a security guard repeatedly in the face and dragging him to the ground before company staffers stepped in to subdue him. Police responded to a call about the fight at 333 7th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, and a person of interest was taken into custody in connection with the incident, per the NYPD.

According to the New York Post, the confrontation began when a delivery app courier attacked Barstool security guard Dan after being asked to leave, striking him in the face and knocking him to the floor. A 31-year-old man punched a 45-year-old man multiple times in the face during the altercation, the outlet reported, and the security guard was treated at the scene, per police. Three Barstool employees ultimately helped subdue the courier, and staffers called 911 as the situation escalated. Barstool did not return a request for comment, according to the same report, and the exact cause of the violence remains unclear.

Additional detail circulating on social media and recounted by BroBible indicates the fight began when content creator Gia Mariano argued with the driver over a food order in a hallway, prompting Dan to intervene before other staff — including Paul “Gaz” Gulczynski, Cody, Travy, and Tom Scibelli — moved to help secure the office. The NYPD said an investigation is ongoing.

Portnoy Posts Video, Takes a Political Jab

Barstool founder and president Dave Portnoy posted video of the brawl to X, and in the same breath sarcastically thanked New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for the attack, per the Post's account of his remarks. Portnoy joked that the security guard might need a few stitches and a couple of beers. It's not the first time Portnoy has aimed political commentary at Mamdani — the Barstool founder has previously said he would love to run against the mayor in a future election, per his prior statement.

Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, became the 112th mayor of New York City on January 1, 2026, after winning the November 2025 municipal election, according to the NYC Mayor's Office. Barstool has kept its New York headquarters on the second and third floors of 333 Seventh Avenue in Chelsea since relocating from Boston in 2016, sharing the 21-story building with tenants that include the city's Board of Education, according to the Commercial Observer.

Uber Cuts Off Courier's Access

Uber removed the courier's access to its platform following the incident, and a company spokesperson said violence is never tolerated, adding that Uber will assist police with their investigation. Under the company's published Community Guidelines, any physical violence, improper contact, or aggressive conduct during a trip or delivery results in immediate, permanent removal of platform access for the driver or courier.

The brawl lands amid a tense stretch for New York's delivery workforce. Under rules enforced by the city's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, app-based couriers have earned a mandatory minimum pay rate of $21.44 per hour before tips since April 2025, rising to $22.13 per hour on April 1, 2026. A separate slate of delivery worker laws took effect on January 26, 2026, requiring apps to offer upfront tipping options of at least 10% at checkout, ensure weekly pay transparency, and guarantee couriers access to restaurant restrooms.

City Hall's Crackdown on Delivery Apps

Just days after those laws took effect, Mamdani and the DCWP announced a $5.2 million settlement with Uber Eats, Fantuan, and HungryPanda over minimum pay violations, including $3.15 million in restitution to more than 48,000 workers and an agreement by Uber to reinstate up to 10,000 wrongfully deactivated couriers. A July report from the same city agency found New Yorkers placed an average of 3.3 million food delivery app orders per week in 2026, while average per-delivery tips climbed from $1.18 to $2.29 following the checkout changes.

That regulatory pressure hasn't been without cost to the workforce. A May 2026 study by the Chamber of Progress, reported by Streetsblog New York City, found that while the minimum pay rule doubled average hourly earnings for active couriers, platform access restrictions and account lockouts contributed to a drop of more than 42,000 active delivery workers citywide.
