A man was tragically killed by gunfire yesterday morning at Carroll Park in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. The New York Police Department reported the incident occurred just before 3 a.m., and the victim, who has not yet been publicly named, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. The NYPD is actively searching for the shooter who is believed to have fled the scene, as reported by The New York Post.
Officials were reviewing the park for any video evidence that could help bring the perpetrator to justice. After the assault, the seriously injured man was rushed to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where, despite the efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead. This information comes from statements obtained by News 12 Brooklyn, which also reported that one person has been taken into custody in connection with the killing.
Residents of the neighborhood expressed shock and dismay at the violent disruption in what is generally known as a family-friendly area. "It's a wonderful park," noted Peter Waldan from nearby Red Hook in an interview with News 12 Brooklyn. Fellow Carroll Gardens resident Adam added, "This is a neighborhood, everybody knows everybody. Everyone feels very safe." However, some did concede that the park has a different atmosphere at night and posed potential dangers.
The community's relief that the shooting did not occur at a time when more people, perhaps even children, could have been present was palpable. "Thank God something like that didn’t happen during the day," Waldan told News 12 Brooklyn. With the shooter still at large, the local police are likely to increase their presence in an effort to reassure the community and deter further incidents.
