A tragic incident unfolded yesterday morning near the Belltown waterfront where a man was struck and killed by a BNSF freight train, prompting an investigation by Seattle police detectives. The incident occurred just before 10 a.m. as patrol officers and firefighters rushed to the scene at Alaskan Way South and Broad Street, where the Seattle Fire Department found the individual deceased, unfortunately, by the time they arrived on the scene, the man had already passed away from his injuries, as reported by SPD Blotter.
Police determined that the male was attempting to cross the tracks after a southbound train had passed, not realizing a northbound train was approaching which resulted in the fatal collision according to the investigation's findings thus far. The information from the engineers onboard paints a somber picture; the train was moving at a modest pace of 15 miles per hour and was nearly at the end of its journey, just two miles short of its destination when the accident occurred.
The investigative team from the Traffic Collision Investigation Squad (TCIS) took charge of the scene, gathering and processing evidence including video confirmations of the events as they transpired, detectives are actively investigating and they have been reviewing footage that lines up with the sequence of events leading to the pedestrian's death; they urge anyone with information related to the incident to step forward and contact TCIS at 206-684-8923.
