Early on New Year's Day, a Boston neighborhood was shaken by gunfire that led to police apprehension of a suspect allegedly carrying a firearm and drugs. At around 4:37 AM, Roxbury officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert at 2343 Washington Street, according to the Boston Police Department's news release.

In their search, officers noticed a group on Washington Street and observed Marcel Barrows, 34, from Roxbury, walking away and then appearing to discard an object. As police approached, they found a Taurus .38 Revolver loaded with ammunition behind a parked car. The arrest revealed not just the firearm, but also a plastic bag containing an estimated seven grams of Crack Cocaine in Barrows' possession.

Barrows now faces multiple charges including Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building, and Possession with Intent to Distribute Class B drugs. His arraignment is scheduled at Roxbury District Court. The ShotSpotter technology, crucial in alerting the incident, has been instrumental in assisting officers to swiftly locate crime scenes in urban areas.
