Amid a time of national mourning for former President Jimmy Carter, Capitol Police disrupted a potential crisis Wednesday. Officers arrested a 44-year-old D.C. man with a machete, and three other knives, as he entered the Capitol Visitor Center, according to a statement released by the Capitol Police and reported by NBC Washington. The police action took place while the public paid their respects to Carter, whose body lies in state at the Capitol Rotunda.
As visitors endured below-freezing conditions to honor the 39th President, it was at around 2 p.m. when the suspect attempted to pass through security. Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger commended his officers, stating, “Our officers know they cannot let their guard down for one second,” NBC Washington reported. The keen eyes of the officers caught a glimpse of the blade through the X-ray machine, leading to immediate action and securing of the weapons.
While this man's motives are still unclear, his arrest did not interrupt the proceedings for those gathered to reflect on Carter's legacy. Sandy Sessink, a mourner from Michigan, shared her personal connection with the late President through her father's admiration, saying, "And we just respect him so much, and I have so much respect for him, and I just wanted to pay my respects," in an emotionally charged statement obtained by NBC Washington.
Security measures were already heightened in the Capitol ahead of President-elect Donald Trump's scheduled meeting with Senate Republicans, which posed further challenges for law enforcement, especially following the weapons arrest. In consideration of the heightened security, the public was allowed to continue paying their respects uninterrupted, with the Capitol Visitor's Center maintaining its operations from early morning Wednesday until Thursday morning, according to CBS News. Just hours after the arrest, President-elect Trump visited the Capitol to pay his respects to Carter, indicating the security response was swift and effective in ensuring continuity of this significant and somber occasion.
Facing criminal charges for carrying dangerous weapons, the apprehended individual’s actions prompted further inquiries, including a suspicious vehicle with unclear writing parked near Capitol grounds. This led to an investigation into additional security threats on a day when thousands were expected to visit the Rotunda. In the wake of the incident, Chief Manger emphasized the importance of constant vigilance by Capitol Police to maintain safety, a sentiment echoed in the aftermath of a peaceful homage paid under the vigilant watch of the law, as Carter's legacy was being honored by a nation in mourning.
Just after 2:00 p.m., our officers stopped and arrested a man who tried to get a machete into the Capitol Visitor Center (CVC).
