The city of Maple Grove is making moves at the state Legislature, eyeing improvements on infrastructure, development, and community services. According to a social media post by City of Maple Grove, MN - Local Government, City Administrator Heidi Nelson highlighted the city's legislative priorities for the year 2025, pinpointing crucial projects such as the overhaul of the Hwy 169/Elm Creek Blvd interchange and an extension of tax increment financing in the gravel mining area.

The aging interchange, which reportedly has difficulties handling daily traffic, was recently subject to a bridge strike that imposed weight limitations and lane restrictions. "We're really urging MNDOT to let's do the project and let's fix the interchange, change the interchange there versus do a repair there," Nelson told CCX Media. Totaling around $20 million, the project has $7 million already allotted for the interchange reconfiguration, which is near ongoing development in the gravel mining area.

In the gravel mining area, Maple Grove seeks legislative support for a timeframe extension for tax increment financing, established back in 2014 and amended in 2017. According to Nelson, there's a push to extend the development timeline by five years, aiming to include more projects in the district, followed by another five years to collect increment financing. "There's about 60 acres left north of Boston Scientific project that are available for development, so we're looking for extending that timeline another five years to get get more projects into the district and then about another five years to collect increment there," stated Nelson in the interview with CCX Media.

The Maple Grove Community Center is also undergoing an expansion, and the city looks to the legislature for amendments related to how state bonding funds can be utilized. Already in possession of approximately $6 million, earmarked for planning and design, Nelson hopes to redirect any surplus towards construction. After reaching an agreement with Lifetime Fitness for incorporation of its facilities into a city-operated center, "Hopefully (it's) a little bit of an easier ask for the legislature to go back and amend some bonding language," Nelson said, as documented by CCX Media. Moreover, Maple Grove is looking for a sales tax exemption for material and labor costs pertaining to the project as part of a prospective tax bill this year.
