Massachusetts drivers should be aware of a text message scam involving fake EZDriveMA tolls. The scam falsely claims that drivers have unpaid E-ZPass tolls, aiming to steal personal and financial information. According to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, these fraudulent texts are part of a "smishing" scam, where scammers create confusion without relying on any actual data breach, as reported by CBS News.
Massachusetts Department of Transportation Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver warned about a nationwide scam targeting people near tolling areas, especially during the holidays. He said, "They're really playing to your psyche, asking you to make sure you avoid these charges and try to do the right thing. And unfortunately, it really gets people roped in." The scam involves fake texts asking for payments, but Gulliver stressed that "EZDriveMA will never request payment by text." He also noted, "This is a nationwide scam going on. It specifically targets people who live nearby tolling authorities," urging people to be cautious, according to CBS News and WCVB.
If you receive a suspicious text about toll fees, don’t click any links or respond. Delete the message and contact the toll authority at 877-627-7745 to verify if it's real. If you've clicked a link or shared information, secure your accounts and file a complaint with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center. This scam, which began in 2024, uses fake invoices to trick people, so always be cautious with unsolicited messages.
