With summer on the horizon, Mayor Muriel Bowser alongside the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) beckons families to apply for this year's discounted rates on DPR's array of summer camp programs. These reduced rates are part of a concerted effort to make summer activities more accessible and affordable for Washington D.C. residents, particularly for those who might feel the pinch of cost as a boundary to their children's participation in enriching experiences. According to a recent announcement by the Mayor's Office, the deadline to apply for these discounted rates is set for February 10, 2025, just prior to the camp registration period.
Mayor Bowser stated, "The Department of Parks and Recreation offers fantastic summer camp options for children and teens, and we don’t want cost to be a barrier for our families," as reported by the Mayor's Office. Bowser continues, urging families to plan ahead despite the winter chill, "We know it’s cold outside right now, but we also know that families are starting to think about their summer plans, and I encourage families to take advantage of our reduced rates."
Familial eligibility for the program depends on household size and income, with discounts as steep as 75% for those with lower incomes. As per the Mayor's Office, a household of four making $40,560 or less can qualify for a 75% discount, while an income of up to $57,720 could still nab them a 50% reduction in camp fees. Families interested in applying must provide proof of residency and income to qualify for the reduced rates, and can find detailed information and the application form at the DPR's official website.
Registration for the summer camps is slated to open on February 14, 2025, through a lottery system that will run until March 3, 2025. Camp information will be accessible starting February 3, giving families ample time to peruse options and prepare applications.
