On his way out of office, Eric Morrissette, the leading figure at the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), introduced a strategic program designed to uplift minority business enterprises through the power of technology. Referred to as the MBDA Innovation Lab, the initiative features a suite of resources tailored to bridge the gap in opportunity for minority-owned businesses. Morrissette emphasized the program's aims, stating, "The Innovation Lab is not just about technology—it's about ensuring that minority business enterprises have the resources and support needed to thrive in a competitive marketplace and uneven playing field," according to an official release from Minority Business Development Agency.
The collaboration between MBDA and the Department of Defense marks a significant milestone in this endeavor. They have come together to build a new online tool. This platform is designed to more easily connect MBEs with federal opportunities, providing a guided experience for businesses to showcase their strengths and find relevant contracts. Aimed at improving accessibility, this tool will leverage technology to offer customized "journey maps" for MBEs to strategically engage with federal procurement and adapt their businesses to seize larger opportunities.
Furthermore, the initiative by MBDA includes the development of a 24/7 digital ecosystem where MBEs can network, learn, and discover project collaborations. This online connector ensures continuous access to vital resources and facilitates event planning for MBDA centers, ranging from business matchmaking to individualized consulting sessions.
To expand its reach, MBDA has also initiated a translation of its outreach materials and important documents into the five most commonly spoken languages in the U.S. beyond English, enhancing the inclusivity of its communications. In October 2024, translated materials were distributed during the National Minority Enterprise Development Week conference, with a commitment to translate most of their online resources within the following three months.
