In Mesa County, a man faces multiple charges after what law enforcement described as a "brutal" hammer attack, followed by a tense standoff. On a day earlier this week, deputies arrived at the Candlewood Trailer Park in Clifton, responding to reports of an assault. They found the victim had escaped to a neighbor's home to seek safety and medical attention. CBS News Colorado reports that the victim was attacked with a hammer, sustaining serious injuries before being taken to a local hospital.
The suspect, identified by the Mesa County Sheriff's Office as 24-year-old Drake Roberts, allegedly refused to cooperate when deputies attempted initial contact. Roberts was believed to be fortifying his position within the residence as deputies tried to engage him. According to KDVR, this barricade situation precipitated the involvement of the SWAT team and lasted for several hours.
Subsequently, law enforcement resorted to introducing gas into the home, which resulted in Roberts' capture at approximately 9:18 p.m. on January 17. KKTV disclosed that even after being taken into custody, Roberts remained combative and did not comply with the officers.
Roberts has been booked at the Mesa County Detention Facility under a litany of charges. These include second-degree assault with a deadly weapon, menacing with a real/simulated weapon, false imprisonment, first-degree kidnapping, sexual assault, penetration with a deadly weapon, third-degree assault, violation of a protection order, and domestic violence. Furthermore, authorities revealed that Roberts was apprehended on a warrant for fugitive justice out of Montrose County, as reported by KDVR.
