Earlier this month, a fraught encounter between Milwaukee police and a young man wanted on severe charges ended with police gunfire, a sequence of events now made public through recently released body camera footage; Emilio Arner-Ortiz, a 19-year-old suspect facing allegations related to child sexual assault, was shot inside a Milwaukee home as police executed a search warrant, as reported by Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Police were greeted by his worried mother upon arrival, a moment captured in the video, and when officers spoke with Arner-Ortiz he inquired about the existence of a warrant, the body camera footage further revealed a struggle between Arner-Ortiz and an officer over a firearm, which escalated to Arner-Ortiz being shot in the midsection.
According to a WISN report, Arner-Ortiz, who was rushed to the hospital and survived. He is now charged with multiple felonies, including second-degree sexual assault of a child under 16, abduction of a child, child enticement, the use of a computer to facilitate a child sex crime, and intentionally pointing a firearm at law enforcement officers during a separate November 7, 2024, incident. Arner-Ortiz preliminary hearing is scheduled for today.
As a standard procedure, the involved officer, a 35-year-old man with over 8 years of service in the force, has been placed on administrative duty pending further investigation, as mentioned in a report by WTMJ.
