Milwaukee is seeking extraordinary women for the 2025 Vel R. Phillips Trailblazer Award. Nominations are open to honor a local woman whose work and life reflect Vel R. Phillips' dedication to social justice and improving life for the community, according to the City of Milwaukee.
Nominations for the Vel R. Phillips Trailblazer Award are due by February 14. Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs explained that the award honors someone who embodies the spirit, dedication, and passion Vel Phillips showed for Milwaukee. The winner will be someone who has worked for social justice, civic engagement, and overcome challenges in these areas, as reported by the City of Milwaukee.
The award is open to women in the Milwaukee area who are not in elected positions. Nominations can be submitted by the nominee or others. Nominations should highlight the nominee's work in social justice or civic engagement, the challenges they've overcome, and how they reflect the spirit of Vel R. Phillips, as per the City of Milwaukee.
The winner will be celebrated at the Girl’s Day @ City Hall event in March, which also aims to inspire future female leaders.
