The Minneapolis Police Department is in mourning following the death of Haven, a cherished horse of the Mounted Patrol Unit, who passed during surgery yesterday. According to a social media post by the Minneapolis Police Department, Haven was not only an invaluable team member but also served as a connection between the officers and Minneapolis communities since joining in 2017.
In the face of tumult, Haven was known for his calm presence, and during his tenure with the MPD Mounted Patrol, he established a friendly rapport with residents and contributed to a sense of safety and connection, the department highlighted Haven's role in strengthening civic relationships and these efforts will be commemorated in a memorial service to be held in his honor this spring while the policing chief Brian O’Hara stated, “Haven wasn’t just a horse; he was a vital part of our team and a bridge between our officers and the community.”
The Mounted Patrol Unit is recognized for the essential role it plays in community-police relations and Haven's dedication to his role has been a prime example of the partnership's potential. As noted by Police Chief O’Hara, the 16-hand-tall Fresian/Shire/Quarter gelding born in 2008, stood out for his extraordinary spirit and service.
In remembrance, the MPD encourages the public to support the unit's mission, inviting contributions through the Minneapolis Police Mounted Patrol Foundation and the Minneapolis Downtown Council's administered "Friends of the Mounted Patrol" which, as CEO Adam Duininck can confirm, are tax-deductible.
