When the Minnesota Department of Safety's Driver and Vehicle Services Division rolled out the blackout license plates last year, expectations were high, but Minnesotans' response has driven those expectations into the rearview mirror.
The Division's sales projections estimated a solid interest with guesses of around 160,000 drivers opting for the sleek, all-black design; however, reality has seen a surge to 256,387 plates purchased in just one year, according to a recent update from the Wright County website. This specialty plate, which adds a $30 annual fee to each motorist's tab, appears to have revved up more enthusiasm than any of the other 120 specialty license plates offered, these plates which feature everything from Minnesota sports team logos to college mascots, this unexpected high demand is illustrating a trend of individual expression through the most mundane of government documents.
The unexpected profits from these sales will continue to contribute to state funds, with the annual fees stacking up as Minnesotans choose to renew these distinctive tabs year after year.
