A small airplane crash at Plum Island Airport late yesterday afternoon resulted in no injuries, though it caused a minor fuel spill and led to the temporary closure of the airport. According to Boston 25 News, the incident involved a single-engine Piper Warrior airplane that was reportedly conducting practice emergency landings when the aircraft came in too low to the runway, striking a nearby fence with one of its wings.
The two aboard the plane reported managed to safely exit the aircraft and reported to JGPR.net that there were no injuries. Emergency crews responded to the scene around 4:55 p.m., where they found the plane tipped onto its side and leaking jet fuel. The Newbury Police and Fire Departments were on scene within minutes of the crash, with the first officer arriving by 4:59 p.m.
Firefighters at the location of the incident estimated that approximately six gallons of jet fuel had leaked from the damaged aircraft. They contained and cleaned up the spill, and subsequently, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection was notified about the incident. The swift and effective response highlighted the readiness and professionalism of the local emergency services in dealing with such unexpected occurrences.
Following the incident, the airport was closed off to ensure safety and to facilitate ongoing investigations. The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified and is expected to conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the accident. The event casts a light, once more, on the need to always be rigorously prepared to deal with the unexpected, even with small aircraft in local aviation. Details about the crash remain sparse, but both Boston 25 News and JGPR.net have assured to stay vigilant in providing updates as the situation develops.
