The Modesto Police Department has received a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to strengthen its efforts in protecting bicyclists and pedestrians. The funding is designated for the department's Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Program, with the aim of reducing crashes and injuries while promoting safer environments for non-motorized travel.

According to a social media post by Modesto Police Department, the program supported by this grant will continue through September 2025. Sergeant Robert Hall is quoted, expressing enthusiasm for the opportunity, "We are excited to receive this grant, which will allow us to significantly expand our bicycle and pedestrian safety program,” further detailing the department's strategy to "reduce crashes and prevent injuries."

The program will also offer community bike rides and bicycle training courses to encourage safe riding behaviors, particularly among youth. Helmet safety will be addressed through inspections and distributions to ensure proper fittings. Additionally, walking safety education will be provided for individuals experiencing homelessness, with a focus on the specific challenges they face.

OTS Director Barbara Rooney reaffirms her office's dedication to road safety, stating, "Everyone moves, and not always by car. It’s important that we invest in efforts to protect people walking, biking and rolling that helps establish a strong traffic safety culture where everyone on California roads can travel to and from places safely." These funds have been provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reflecting a broader national focus on road safety for all forms of traffic, including pedestrians and cyclists, according to the Modesto Police Department.
