Henry County drivers take note: Route Z will be closed for a stretch of days starting at the tail end of January. As per an announcement by the Missouri Department of Transportation, significant infrastructure work is poised to disrupt traffic from January 28 through February 5. This necessary inconvenience comes in the form of pipe replacement across numerous sites along the rural sweep of Route Z, from Southeast County Road 251 to Henry County Route U, just north of Lowry City.
The work is scheduled for the daylight hours of 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on weekdays, and while the road will reopen during nighttime hours and weekends, Missouri Department of Transportation implores local drivers to plan detours, as no formal re-routes will be posted. According to the Missouri Department of Transportation's announcement, those requiring access to adjacent properties will be accommodated, but "Route Z CLOSED where crews are working," a straightforward message underscoring the complete blockage during active construction.
Travelers should not only expect interruptions but also prepare for possible changes due to the whims of weather or scheduling hiccups, a reminder of the tentative nature of roadwork and our reliance on the less predictable forces that surround our carved pavements. Missouri Department of Transportation does offer a lifeline for the navigationally nimble—a Traveler Information Map on their website—providing real-time updates on road closures and traffic impacts, a digital compass in the midst of infrastructural refresh.
Worth noting, this isn't the project's first rodeo. The work was initially slated for a year-start sprint from December 30 to January 10 but faced delay, due to unsparing winter conditions. Missouri Department of Transportation's scheduling shuffle points to a familiar dance with elements beyond our control, and as always, patience, and flexibility from the public will be as crucial as the steel and concrete that form the sturdy underbelly of Route Z.
