As Missouri grapples with a severe winter onslaught, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is strongly advising against travel in areas burdened by heavy snowfall. Crews are laboring day and night to clear the affected routes, as reported by MoDOT. The northern region of the state has been particularly hit hard, with snow accumulation ranging from 8 inches to over a foot and isolated areas in the northwest nearing two feet. Driving conditions remain perilous, especially on less frequented roads such as entrance and exit ramps and non-interstate highways, where snow continues to build up and the cold renders road-clearing materials significantly less effective.
Amidst these challenging conditions, MoDOT Director Ed Hassinger extended gratitude to residents for avoiding road travel during the storm's peak; however, he emphasized the need for ongoing patience as cleanup efforts persist, "Thank you to Missourians for heeding the warnings and staying off the roads during the storm. We need continued patience over the next couple of days as crews keep working to clear off the snow and clear downed trees from the ice," said Hassinger, while also highlighting that staff from the southern parts of Missouri are being redeployed to assist the most heavily impacted northern areas, according to MoDOT.
Motorists unfortunate enough to find themselves stranded are cautioned to remain in their vehicles, considering the risk of sliding accidents and exposure to the extreme cold. Moreover, in a collaborative effort to manage the storm impacts, MoDOT acknowledges various state agencies for their assistance, including the State Emergency Management Agency, the Missouri Department of Public Safety, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the Missouri National Guard, all brought together in a coordinated storm response to ensure safety and facilitate road recovery operations Hassinger noted the crucial role of these partnerships in managing the emergency response to the snowstorm impacts throughout Missouri.
As the situation unfolds, Missouri residents are encouraged to stay updated on road conditions and heed continued warnings until the state's transportation department deems roads safe for travel again updates will be continually provided as MoDOT and its emergency response partners diligently work to restore normalcy in the wake of the severe winter storm.
