The Town of Mountain View is controversial as a council member faces potential recall following serious allegations. As announced by town officials on Thursday, a petition to recall Councilman Brent John Metz, who is accused of shooting a teen in the face, has garnered enough valid signatures to move forward. This development comes off the back of charges filed against Metz, including second-degree assault, menacing, and illegal discharge of a firearm.
According to KDVR, Mountain View's town clerk has declared that barring any protests to the petition by January 21, a recall election will be triggered against Metz. This follows an incident in September 2024, where two teenagers ventured onto a property seeking a scenic location for homecoming photos. Upon finding no one at the door and writing a note to the homeowner, they reportedly faced an armed Metz who discharged his firearm, injuring one teen.
Denver7 reports that Metz, 38, is also charged with two counts of reckless endangerment and that his bond was set at $5,000. While the shooting took place at a home in Conifer, Metz is a resident and elected official in Mountain View. The names of the teen victims have not been disclosed due to their status as juveniles.
The details of the case are disturbing. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, responding to the scene, found a 17-year-old bleeding heavily from his face with a bullet hole in the teenager's windshield. As obtained by 9News, after the incident, it was reported by the sheriff's office that Metz exclaimed, "Oh sh**, my gun went off," and then he attempted to render aid to the injured teen. The unexpected recall measures and court proceedings loom ahead for Metz, with the arraignment hearing scheduled on January 21, the same deadline for challenges to the recall petition.
