Nassau County is making strides towards enhancing its recreational offerings with the upcoming Westside Regional Park. In a social media post, the county announced a pre-construction meeting that took place yesterday for Phase One of the project. The gathering brought together county staff, McCall Construction Management, and various subcontractors to hash out logistics for the 107-acre park's initial phase.
The meeting focused on practical necessities such as sidewalk placement, utilities, fire hydrants, and landscaping. They also took care to discuss safety plans and the construction timeline. The notice to proceed was issued yesterday with work scheduled to officially begin on January 20. Yet, the journey from idea to reality has been a comprehensive one, involving community feedback which helped shape the park's conceptual plan, adopted by the Board of County Commissioners back in May 2021.
Intended to be more than a mere athletic space, Westside Regional Park aims to cater to a broader range of leisure activities, as highlighted by the diverse planned facilities. Among these will be multi-use trails, multiple-purpose fields, a dog park, a large playground, a stocked fishing pond, an airnasium, and even an amphitheater. Funding for the project comes from a mixture of impact fees, grants, and county funds, rounding out the county's vision for a communal space that emphasizes recreation and social interaction.
With an anticipated completion date of April 30, 2026, the park is expected to be a regional destination for both leisure and learning, as evidenced by community input. A grand opening event is also on the horizon for the late spring or early summer of 2026, marking the culmination of years of planning and development.
