The National Weather Service in New Orleans has issued a Winter Storm Warning, urging residents and travelers in several Louisiana and Mississippi counties to brace for potentially perilous conditions. Starting from midnight and extending to midnight CST Tuesday night, heavy mixed precipitation is expected, with total snow and sleet accumulations between 3 and 6 inches, accompanied by a light glaze of ice. This severe weather is forecasted to affect portions of southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi, potentially impacting Tuesday's commutes both in the morning and evening, according to the National Weather Service.
In conjunction with the Winter Storm Warning, the National Weather Service has also reinforced a Cold Weather Advisory until 9 AM CST this morning, and again from 6 PM this evening to 6 PM CST Tuesday. As per the advisory, residents can expect "very cold wind chills as low as 15" during these timeframes, which could lead to frostbite and hypothermia if precautions are not taken. An Extreme Cold Watch remains in effect from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning, with "dangerously cold wind chills as low as 5 above possible."
These conditions are not merely discomforting but can be outright dangerous, causing ruptured water pipes and hypothermia due to prolonged exposure. The advisory includes recommendations such as dressing in layers, which should include a hat, face mask, and gloves. Additionally, it advises to take measures to prevent water pipes from freezing and stresses the importance of keeping pets indoors and ensuring outdoor animals have warm, dry shelters with unfrozen water, as reported by the National Weather Service.
Residents are urged to make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors to ensure safety during this time. Proper usage of portable heaters is emphasized, alongside advices against using generators or grills inside homes to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Any travel should be approached with extreme caution; those venturing outside are advised to wear adequate clothing to protect against the severe chill, as per the National Weather Service.
