Tragedy struck in southwest Columbus in the early hours of New Year's Day, resulting in the death of two individuals. As reported by NBC4i, a devastating sequence of events began after a Hyundai Elantra, operated by Keith Klatt, 56, and Joellen Klatt, 53, was involved in an initial non-injury crash at the intersection of Alkire and Norton roads around 12:55 a.m.
While the Klatts were outside their vehicle, exchanging information with the other involved driver, an oncoming Dodge Dakota pickup truck failed to navigate the intersection safely. The Klatts were subsequently struck by the truck, with Keith being pronounced dead at the scene at 1 a.m. and Joellen succumbing to her injuries less than an hour later at a local hospital, detailed in coverage by ABC 6. The pickup truck driver reportedly attempted to flee but was apprehended by police.
Authorities have disclosed that the driver of the truck has been arrested for operating a vehicle while impaired (OVI). However, the suspect's identity has not yet been released.
