Atlanta police were called to The Reserve at Hollywood Apartments after an early morning altercation turned deadly on New Year's Eve. A dispute described by investigators as stemming from a love triangle ended with a 28-year-old mother shot to death. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the Atlanta Police Department responded to the incident in the Scotts Crossing neighborhood and subsequently detained two individuals for questioning, including the victim's current and former partners.
The case quickly developed as authorities declared the incident as "a felon killed by private citizen," suggesting the killing may have been in self-defense. The woman was found deceased in a third-floor apartment after succumbing to a gunshot wound to the head. Homicide Commander Lt. Andrew Smith told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the argument involved another woman who called 911 and that "It appears there was an escalating dispute between the two."
This is not the first incident of violence at this particular apartment complex. Since early June, four others, including a teenager, have been fatally shot. The victims include 16-year-old Maurice Weems, whose death is connected to three suspects still at-large, and 21-year-old Jacquez Harris, who was found shot multiple times behind a building. In July, young Weems was tragically found dead on the premises, leaving behind a community and family grappling with loss and the grim continuity of violence. Weems' grandmother, in an interview obtained by the AJC, expressed deep regret that she could not be there to give her grandson a lift before the fatal incident.
The Atlanta Police Department is investigating the recent shooting and looking into the history of violence at The Reserve at Hollywood Apartments. Authorities and community leaders are working to find ways to reduce violence and protect resident.
