An investigation into a potential bomb threat at a I-95 rest stop in St. Johns County on Tuesday night revealed no illegal devices and led to no arrests, according to local law enforcement. The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office (SJCSO) detailed the incident, which began after officials from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) alerted them to a person of interest who may have been harboring explosive devices in his vehicle. The report prompted law enforcement to evacuate the rest area near mile marker 303 while the investigation was underway.
A statement from SJCSO, referenced by First Coast News, clarified that "The sheriff's office said the person was 'very cooperative' and interviewed into the early morning. The person was not arrested nor were any illegal devices found." This update came after a commercial grade firework, not a bomb, was discovered in the suspect's vehicle, which temporarily intensified the concern for public safety.
Earlier reports had circulated that pipe bombs had been found, leading to an arrest. However, according to a SJ Citizen update, an official from the SJCSO later clarified that "the unidentified man had commercial grade fireworks, not pipe bombs." This statement put to rest earlier rumors about the nature of the devices found.
In detailing the sequence of events, Action News Jax reported that the tip initially came from an individual in a another state who had observed the suspicious devices and thus notified authorities. After the SJSCO responded, they subsequently posted to Facebook saying, "The investigation revealed no evidence of a crime or threat to the community; no arrest was made, and no illegal devices were discovered," underscoring the unfounded nature of the alert and alleviating concerns posed to the surrounding area.
Despite the intensity of the situation and the assertive response by law enforcement, the event concluded without harm to the public or any legal action against the individual detained.
