Oakland's Downtown Senior Center, nestled in the Veterans' Memorial Building at 200 Grand Avenue, marked a significant milestone by unveiling its latest improvements. City officials and community members came together to cut the ribbon on a series of upgrades to rejuvenate the space, a beacon for the city's aging population. Interim Oakland Mayor Kevin Jenkins expressed gratitude towards local voters for passing Measure KK in 2016, which funded the $2.5 million project.
To modernize the facility, the ground floor underwent a partial renovation. New flooring, a fresh coat of paint, updated signage, and energy-efficient LED lighting were installed. The changes span nearly 10,000 square feet, replacing outdated finishes that have seen little attention since the 1980s. Additionally, the project included crucial sewer lateral replacement, infrastructural accessibility improvements, and parking lot enhancements, as reported on the City of Oakland's official website.
According to District 3 Councilmember Carroll Fife, the Downtown Senior Center offers various classes and activities, from dance to crafts and computing - essential for engaging the city’s elders. Furthermore, city administrator Jestin Johnson lauded the dedication of City staff and project partners, emphasizing the center’s significance as a resource and a testament to community investment. Assistant City Administrator LaTonda Simmons, meanwhile, highlighted the undying commitment to Oaklands' seniors and the innovative programs offered daily aimed at their well-being.
Interim Public Works Director Josh Rowan highlighted the building's storied past and mentioned how the project has improved accessibility for visitors with mobility aids. DOSC has been a cornerstone in providing meals, exercise, and social activities for a nominal $12 annual membership, as outlined by Ana Bagtas, manager of the Human Services Department. Jill Gernand, Chair of the center's Advisory Council, also encouraged local involvement with a call to volunteers at the center's beloved Consignment Shop.
