Oklahoma's education system is attracting attention with the launch of the Oklahoma Teacher Empowerment Program (OTEP), with Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) receiving approval from State Superintendent Ryan Walters. Walters praised OKCPS Superintendent Dr. Jamie Polk for introducing merit pay for teachers, aiming to improve education quality in the state. "Oklahoma is leading the nation in innovative solutions to reward our best teachers and keep them in the classroom where they can best serve our students. By focusing resources on rewarding high-performing educators, we will attract and retain top-tier talent in our classrooms while driving significant improvements in student outcomes,” Walters said in a statement from the Oklahoma State Department of Education release.

The OTEP program aims to reward high-performing educators by offering significant raises. These teachers will also train and develop their peers, especially those who are emergency-certified. Participants will also help develop curricula and provide high-intensity tutoring for students in need.

Currently, 33 OKCPS teachers are part of the merit pay program, receiving $211,500 in additional funds. Walter said in the same release, "I commend Dr. Polk for her vision and leadership. In implementing the Oklahoma Teacher Empowerment Program, she has helped ensure her teachers are eligible for substantial raises."
