Overnight tragedy struck Houston's Fifth Ward, as a house fire claimed the life of one person and injured another. According to KPRC 2, the Houston Fire Department received a distress call after 1:30 a.m. for a blaze on Lila Street, just off Eastex Freeway near Liberty Street.
The incident left a community grieving, and officials are still piecing together how the events unfolded. Details surrounding the fire remain scarce; however, the names of the victims have yet to be released to ensure their privacy, as they were not firefighters, as reported by KPRC 2.
Adding to the report, KHOU states that the Houston Police Department and the Houston Fire Department responded to a call just past 1:40 a.m. at the intersection of Lila Street and Ralston Road. Reports suggest that occupants inside the house woke to find it filled with smoke, with one individual tragically not making it out.
The second victim was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, and while their condition has not been disclosed, this development adds to the weight of the tragedy. The fire has since been extinguished, but roads near the scene remain blocked, signaling an ongoing and thorough investigation by emergency crews. Authorities, accordingly, have advised the public to keep a distance from the affected area.
