A tragic incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when a Metra train struck a vehicle in Chicago's Norwood Park neighborhood, leading to at least one fatality. The collision happened near the intersection of Nagle and Avondale Avenues, approximately around 3:50 p.m., according to a spokesperson for Metra. The Union Pacific Northwest Line outbound train 717 was involved in the crash, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.
The Cook County medical examiner's office has yet to release the identity of the deceased individual as of the evening following the incident. In a statement obtained by CBS News, witnesses shared their experiences, with Sylvia Bresnahan recounting, "It was just a little shake, like I thought it was going around a corner, and then all of a sudden we stopped, and the conductor come through and said they hit a car." The severity of the crash and details as to how the vehicle came to be in the train's path remain unclear.
Metra officials confirmed the death of one person in the vehicle, with further details about the victim's age and gender currently unavailable. The crash had far-reaching effects, temporarily halting all inbound and outbound trains on the Union Pacific Northwest Line due to the subsequent investigation. As the CBS News report mentioned, this disruption spanned a couple of hours before regular train service was to resume eventually.
