As the holiday season stretches on, Orlando International Airport has been experiencing a notable surge in travelers. Today, the airport was abuzz, marking the fifth-highest traffic day of the entire season. According to WFTV, an expected 182,000 passengers were to navigate through the airport swiftly, solidifying Orlando's status as a prime tourist hub. The reported wait times at security checkpoints stretched to 45 minutes, though airport officials prepped for an even busier period, anticipating close to 2.9 million travelers by the season's closure.

Despite the rush, New Year's Day provided a brief respite, with fewer travelers than in the days leading up to and following it. In a statement reported by WESH, a passenger, Chastity Russ from Maryland, shared that she and her family allotted themselves two and a half hours for airport navigation but "didn't need it at all." She found the process to be unexpectedly smooth, saying, "We actually went through very quickly. This one was scared that we were going to get a hiccup through security and stuff like that but no. It was great." Regardless, passenger volume is expected to again pick up after the holiday, with an additional 20,000 travelers forecasted for the following Thursday.

The busy season, lasting from December 20 to January 5, has kept airport staff and facilities operating at peak capacity. During the first of the year, the relative lull was seen as an outlier, with Yuri Streciwik, another traveler, expressing to WESH that "Flying on the first of the year is always a good day." With the season drawing to a near end, January 4th is already pegged as the upcoming high-traffic day as holidaymakers conclude their vacations.
