A semi-truck accident caused disruption near Detroit Metro Airport yesterday afternoon after the vehicle overturned on I-94, spilling across lanes and onto Merriman Road. The mishap, occurring around 2:30 p.m., led to the closer of the Merriman Road in both directions, as confirmed by Michigan State Police. The driver, who was hauling water, experienced a loss of control in the eastbound lanes, struck the center median guardrail and then continued across the westbound lanes before crashing into the median divider wall on Merriman Road, reported CBS News Detroit.
The incident took place at a critical junction for airport-bound traffic and required extensive cleanup efforts. Officials advised drivers to seek alternative routes, suggesting Middle Belt Road to Eureka or I-275 to Eureka to bypass the closed exit ramp. The driver of the semi was evaluated for minor injuries at the scene, but specifics on what caused the driver to lose control were initially not supplied by the authorities. In an effort to provide immediate updates, officials with the city of Romulus utilized Facebook to communicate developments with the public, according to Audacy.
First Lt. Mike Shaw of the Michigan State Police reflected on the seriousness of the incident, stating, "This crash could have been a lot worse. We were lucky there was not any traffic on Merriman when the crash occurred," as told to FOX 2 Detroit. Shaw emphasized the broader responsibility of drivers by continuing to say, "This serves as another reminder to drive a safe and prudent speed. It is every driver’s responsibility to maintain control of their vehicle."
Despite the initial disruption, the semi was reported to have been removed from the scene by 5:20 p.m., with efforts persisting to repair the damaged median wall.
