The Oxnard Police Department has made public a Critical Incident Community Briefing video that details the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting that took place on October 21, 2024. According to the news release by Oxnard Police, at approximately 8:15 PM, officers responded to reports of shots fired from a vehicle in the 3700 block of Leeward Way, arriving to find Cesar Ayala-Arteaga, the male suspect who matched the caller's description.
During the encounter, when confronted by the officers, Ayala-Arteaga reportedly armed himself with a firearm. Despite officers' attempts to de-escalate, he aimed the weapon at them, prompting two officers to fire their service weapons, hitting Ayala-Arteaga once. Having been treated at the Ventura County Medical Center, Ayala-Arteaga was later charged with multiple offenses, including assault with a deadly weapon, with a bail set at $1,000,000.00, as noted by the Oxnard Police Department.
Details were corroborated by RMG News footage, which shows the suspect shouting and brandishing a revolver before being shot by police. Although discharged, the specifics of the ammunition used have not been disclosed, as detailed by Hoodline.
Once cleared following standard procedure, all officers involved in the shooting have returned to their duties. "As part of our commitment to transparency with our community, we believe it is important to share this video with the community we serve," stated Police Chief Jason Benites, as per the Oxnard Police Department, emphasizing the department's intention to forgo offering opinions or analysis through the video. The case remains an active criminal investigation, with a court date scheduled for February 20.
