South Ocean Boulevard, the prominent thoroughfare that runs alongside former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, has once again opened to traffic. This event, as reported by CBS12, comes after nearly six months of a security-oriented closure that saw residents and service providers needing to provide proper identification to gain passage. The prolonged restriction, which extended to the bridges and marine pathways in proximity to the estate, was implemented due to security concerns involving "Mar-a-Lago and U.S. Secret Service-protected" individuals.
According to Palm Beach Daily News, the local community expected the roadblock to ease up following the November presidential election, but it went on to remain established well past the predicted duration. The reopening marks a return to normalcy for traffic patterns and bridge operations, with the Town of Palm Beach announcing that schedules will revert to their usual states. The community had anticipated this move, which is expected to alleviate the gridlock that had built up due to the closure of the crucial north-south connector on the island.
With Trump’s departure from his Palm Beach estate to attend events in Washington, D.C., the road was finally able to open again. This change comes ahead of his presidential inauguration for a second term, set to take place today. "For the first time since Palm Beach resident Donald Trump was elected to a second term in the White House, South Ocean Boulevard next to his Mar-a-Lago Club reopened to traffic on Saturday night," Palm Beach officials said in an alert quoted by Palm Beach Daily News. As a result of Trump’s absence, the U.S. Coast Guard security zones have also been lifted, allowing marine traffic to flow unobstructed through the Intracoastal past Mar-a-Lago.
Before the mid-August deal was struck, which allowed the road and bridges to open when Trump was not in residence for extended periods, the Secret Service had mandated a full-time closure of South Ocean Boulevard next to the club.
