Pasco County Man Charged with Vehicular Homicide for Fatal Tampa Crash Involving MotherSource: Tampa Police Department

A 67-year-old Pasco County man has been charged with vehicular homicide in a crash that killed a 26-year-old mother, Tampa Police report. The wreck occurred last Friday when Gary Manist, driving a Dodge Ram 2500, reportedly struck the victim's Kia Sorento as she made a left-hand turn at an intersection. Manist was said to be traveling at speeds that surpassed 55 mph over the limit, reaching over 100 mph, according to ABC Action News.

Further details provided by Tampa Bay Times indicated that the incident, which took place around 9:45 a.m. at the intersection of McKinley Drive and Bougainvillea Avenue, also involved a third vehicle, a Kia Forte. The driver of a Kia Forte reportedly swerved to try to avoid the initial impact but ultimately collided with a light pole.

Manist, along with a passenger in his vehicle, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at a nearby hospital. The driver of the Forte, an unidentified adult male, was also hospitalized with injuries not considered life-threatening. "Witnesses reported hearing the Dodge 'accelerating as the traffic light was changing,'" noted the Tampa Bay Times.

Following an investigation that confirmed the excessive speed of Manist's vehicle, Tampa police arrested him on Jan. 7 without incident. In a statement given to WFLA, the department disclosed, "Evidence gathered during the police department’s investigation into the crash proved that Manist was traveling at more than 55 mph over the posted speed limit when the crash occurred." Manist is currently held in the Pasco County Jail. The identity of the deceased woman has not been released, out of respect for the family and ongoing procedural formalities.
