Yesterday afternoon, a seaplane faced a harrowing moment as it crash-landed and subsequently sank in Long Lake, Kitsap County. KIRO 7 reported that the lone pilot, whose identity has not been disclosed, appeared to be uninjured. He managed to remain with the overturned aircraft following the accident.
Rescue was swift to arrive; within minutes, a private boat operator had navigated the lake's waters to bring the pilot ashore, according to an announcement by deputies. FOX 13 Seattle noted that the pilot was rescued without injury.
However, the mood was less fortunate on the other side of the globe where tragedy struck off Rottnest Island. A seaplane crashed, breaking up during the impact and claiming three lives, while several survivors were retrieved from the wreckage. Police divers found the bodies beneath the water's surface after a search throughout Tuesday afternoon, as The Guardian reported. Among the survivors was a range of nationalities, including Swiss and Danish.
Investigators are currently scanning through electronic devices to piece together the seaplane's final moments off the coast of Western Australia. Parts of the wreckage have been hauled ashore while an exclusion zone was put in place encompassing 200 meters to allow for the ongoing investigation and salvage operation.
