An investigation is currently underway following a violent incident at the Racine County Jail on New Year's Eve, where an inmate was assaulted by another, resulting in life-threatening injuries. According to JSONLINE, the assault took place in the dayroom of the facility at approximately 12:15 p.m.
While completing a routine safety check prior to the incident, which corrections protocol obligates, the victim, a 35-year-old man from Racine, was in the same wing supervised by an officer when the assailant launched the attack, as described by CBS58. The victim was later found unresponsive by the officer during the subsequent security round and was provided with immediate lifesaving measures.
The Racine County Sheriff's Office stated that the ordeal, caught on security cameras within the dayroom, lasted "less than one minute," and no inmates triggered any of the functional emergency buttons available in all cells, FOX6NOW reported. Following the attack, the victim was rushed to the hospital where he remains on life support, his attorney conveyed.
The perpetrator of the assault was promptly identified by authorities and has since been segregated from the general inmate population. The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department agreed to lead the criminal investigation to ensure its impartiality. The assailant's name and the motive behind the attack have not been released, maintaining the ongoing nature of the inquiry.
