As Rice County heads into its township elections, scheduled for March 11, a suite of local candidates are preparing to vie for various seats, including those for treasurer and supervisor. Notably, two roles have garnered no formal declarations of intent, leaving room for write-in candidates to potentially assume the positions of Northfield Township Treasurer and Morristown Township Clerk.
The stakes of these local elections, while not as headline-grabbing as national races, remain critical to the daily governance and fiscal management within these communities. Positions on the ballot are opening across several townships, with each township supervisor seat carrying a three-year term. Forest Township differs from its counterparts, as it appoints its treasurer rather than elects, a practice Erin Township voters will also contemplate adopting for their town clerk and treasurer, according to an announcement on Rice County's official government website.
For residents aiming to participate in the democratic process, February 18 marks the last day to pre-register to vote, with options to submit paper applications by 5 p.m. or register online by the stroke of midnight. Moreover, the option to cast an absentee ballot will be available starting February 7 through March 7 at the Rice County Government Services Building, with additional hours set aside on the weekend and the day before the election to accommodate voters' schedules.
The list of candidates spans across various townships with hopefuls such as Debbie Salaba seeking the Bridgewater Treasurer role and Karl R. Francis Jr. pursuing the Supervisor seat in Cannon City. Across the border in Erin, locals will cast their ballots for Elgin Trcka and David Ceplecha for treasurer and supervisor roles, respectively. Meanwhile, the Forest Township will decide between Ronald Gernandt and Bob Jacobson as its supervisor. Each township boasts candidates ready to steer their communities, with election details like polling hours and annual meeting times outlined on the aforementioned county site.
Voting locations and times across the townships vary from spots such as 500 Railway St in Dundas for Bridgewater residents to 7250 154th St W in Faribault for Shieldsville locals.
